Botox Q & A

What is Botox?

Botox injections are a popular cosmetic solution that is made from a purified form of the botulinum toxin. They are commonly used to treat deep wrinkles and facial folds. As the botulinum toxin blocks the nerves responsible for muscle contractions, the targeted muscles relax, and wrinkles are significantly diminished or eliminated.

What kinds of wrinkles are treated by Botox?

Your face develops two types of wrinkles. Dynamic wrinkles are caused by years of repetitive muscle movements responsible for facial expressions, like frowning and squinting.

The second type appears over time due to age-related changes in your skin. As you age, your skin becomes dehydrated and thins out. You also produce less collagen and elastin, so skin loses strength and elasticity.

Sun damage further accelerates age-related changes. The combined effect results in lines known as static wrinkles.

Botox effectively treats dynamic wrinkles such as:

  • Crow’s feet
  • Frown lines
  • Forehead furrows
  • Bunny lines on the upper nose
  • Neck bands

Dr. Gressel can advise you on whether Botox is the best treatment for your aesthetic goals.

Will Botox affect my natural facial expressions?

Dr. Gressel targets a few small areas of the specific muscles responsible for your problematic wrinkles. The majority of your muscles continue to work normally, so your face shows expression and your appearance stays natural.

What happens during treatment with Botox?

Before your session, Dr. Gressel explains the procedure and answers your questions, so you’ll know what to expect. The procedure takes about 15 minutes but could be shorter depending on the injection site.

After your treatment, the area may be slightly red, but there’s minimal, if any, bleeding, and little-to-no swelling. You don’t need to plan for significant downtime, but you should wait several hours before participating in strenuous activities.

How long do results last from Botox treatments?

You’ll see the benefits of your Botox injection in 2-3 days; then your results can last up to four months. You can choose to get another round of injections when the effects wear off. In many cases, results last longer when you have regular Botox injections.
